Kalimats is a free Arabic crossword game you play straight in the browser — no account, no download, no ads interrupting the grid. It offers 240 puzzles across eight topics and three difficulty levels, all written in Modern Standard Arabic and laid out right-to-left the way Arabic is actually read.

Arrow words, not numbered clues

These are arrow-word puzzles (كلمات مسهمة), the format most common in the Arab world. Instead of a numbered clue list beside the grid, each clue sits inside a shaded cell within the grid itself, with a small arrow pointing at the first letter of its answer and showing the direction to write in. You never look away from the grid, which is why the format works so well on a phone.

A single clue cell can carry two clues with two arrows — two answers starting from the same square in different directions. That is normal, not a bug.

Learning Arabic with crosswords

Crosswords are unusually good for vocabulary because they force recall rather than recognition. Reading a word list lets you nod along; a crossword makes you produce the word from a definition and a couple of crossing letters. For learners, the easy level of the general topic is the right entry point — the clues are direct and the vocabulary is everyday.

One practical note on Arabic orthography: hamza seats are treated leniently, so ئ، ؤ، ة and ى are all accepted where they reasonably fit. You are solving a word game, not sitting a spelling exam.

How to play

1. Tap any white square to select its word — the whole answer highlights.
2. Type with the on-screen Arabic keyboard, or your physical one. The cursor advances by itself.
3. A completed word turns green immediately. Check marks wrong letters in red.
4. Hint reveals one letter; you get three per puzzle.
5. Progress saves to your browser automatically — close the tab and come back to the same state.
